The Frequent Causes of Farting Can Be Serious Disease

Farting or passing gas is common, but if it becomes too frequent, this complaint can be disturbing. The cause of frequent farts can vary. Generally, people can pass gas up to 10 times a day. But if farts are more frequent than that, further examination is needed whether the frequent cause of farts is a sign of more serious health problems. Fart is a gas in the digestive tract that is discharged from the body through the anus. Fart generally starts from excess gas in the upper digestive tract which can be caused by many things, from swallowing too much air, chewing gum, to consuming too many certain types of food. In addition to frequent farts, excess gas can also be accompanied by flatulence and belching. Listed below are a number of possible causes for frequent farts.

Eat certain foods

Eating certain foods can be a frequent cause of farts. Below are some of the foods that are generally the cause of excess gas production:
  • Nuts.
  • Milk and milk products.
  • Vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, cabbage, bok choy.
  • Rice bran / skin.
  • Carbonated drinks, like beer and soda.
  • Fructose, which is a sweetener in certain fruits and products.
  • Sorbitol, which is an artificial sweetener in sugar-labeled products.
  • Onion.
  • Banana, apple.
  • Carrots, celery.
  • Pasta, potatoes.
In general, foods that are high in fiber, which are made from flour, and which contain natural sugars are more at risk of causing frequent farts. You can note which farts most often cause, if you find complaints often fart. But keep in mind that the same food can cause different reactions in each person. One food that causes frequent farts in one person may not necessarily cause the same reaction in other people.

Swallowing too much wind

Swallowing too much wind is 50% the cause of frequent farts. Unwittingly, this can be caused by certain activities such as: eating or drinking too fast, smoking, drinking using a straw, consuming carbonated drinks, sucking sweets or similar foods, wearing dentures that are too loose, and often swallowing saliva like when anxious.

However, there are times when the cause of frequent farts, especially those that fart more than 20 times a day, is the possibility of certain diseases as below.
  • Diabetes.
  • Crohn's disease.
  • Dumping Syndrome.
  • Eating Disorders.
  • GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) or stomach acid disease.
  • Celiac disease.
  • Autoimmune pancreatitis.
  • Gastroparesis.
  • Lactose intolerance.
  • Indigestion.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Ulcerative colitis.
  • Stomach ulcer disease.
In addition, often farts can also be caused by side effects of consuming certain drugs such as drugs to treat type 2 diabetes such as acarbose, or even drugs containing lactulose or sorbitol sugar.

Certain foods that are not digested or fully absorbed

Some of the excess gas comes from the breakdown of microbes in food processing, such as methane, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen or other compounds such as sulfur that cause unpleasant odors. Excess gas can occur when the body cannot digest some carbohydrates due to the absence of certain enzymes in the small intestine. This undigested food is then transferred to the large intestine, which will then be processed into carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and sometimes methane, which then comes out to fart. For example, lactose intolerance can cause lactose to not be fully digested. Lactose is a natural sugar in milk and its derivatives such as cheese. Apart from frequent farts, other symptoms that can arise are diarrhea and cramps. Avoiding foods containing lactose can reduce the frequency of farts and other unwanted effects. Controlling food consumption, especially those that may be the cause of frequent farts, can be one solution. Eating foods in small portions regularly is better than eating occasionally but in large quantities. Although generally farting is often harmless, but if the frequency of farts is felt excessive, you can see a doctor to control the excess gas. Check with your doctor if farting is often accompanied by other symptoms that are felt worrying such as diarrhea, constipation, blood in the stool, nausea, and vomiting.
